Once designed properly it can correct every bit of the ladder. Nowadays 24 bit resolution is standard. What tolerance is needed to achieve 24 bit resolution? The tolerance of the resistor will never solve Imperfections of a ladder.

This is only in theory because the discreteness of the switch logic chips have already too much internal impedance and will destroy the impossible tolerance of a resistor. The next day, our doorbell rang and the DAC was back. Talk about service! These jumpers can fine-tune oversampling or NOS modes. Our loaner arrived with no jumpers set to 'on'. That meant it was set to x 8 oversampling with a steep dB stop-band attenuation. Switching back to the default upsampling resulted in a less poignant sound.

With oversampling active, the sound was more linear throughout even if the soundstage was also more confined to the loudspeakers and the space between them. In NOS mode, the stage grew wider and deeper but at a cost to tonality.

We had a good time playing with these possibilities. Since we could find no hints on their website as to their actions, we just followed our ears. This arrived us at NOS mode with a shallower filter setting. As Srajan mentioned in his review of it, its dynamic range is a massive 50dB. A nice detail of his review is that he too used an R2R DAC and amplifiers with ultra-fast rise times.

That live-vibe aspect has a lot to do with instrumental sizing. An unspoiled recording with large dynamic range puts a true-sized instrument in the room and that's exactly what happened here with the settings mentioned.

Kingwa has no fucking clue how to write digital filters or design analog circuitry that sound like anything but insipid garbage. I discovered this minutes after the perspiring, swearing Fed Ex guy carried the Chinese DAC up the three flights of stairs to my apartment—the Terminator lives up to its name by weighing around 50 pounds and filling out a case that nearly overwhelmed my oversized Box Furniture rack.

Even at low volume, every track sounded so approachable, so easy to listen to, that I simply let Roon Radio drive. This was the first lesson the Terminator taught me—the extent to which my listening habits prioritized recordings that my hi-fi could make reliably lifelike, and excluded a whole swath of favorite music, leaving much hip-hop, eighties pop, hard rock, metal and early mono recordings unplayed. Unlike certain components—which render recordings as though someone had turned their Photoshop contrast and sharpness controls all the way up—the Terminator achieved this level of realism without relying on hyped-up treble detail, but neither did it sound slow, gooey or dark.

On the contrary, its sheer aural physicality ruled out tone-curve trickery—it allowed me to sit back and listen without having to work quite so hard to complete the process of reproduction in my mind, and this made my neck and shoulders unclench.

That was the second lesson—real music relaxes you. Like many of the other DACs that have impressed me as making music as opposed to sonic holograms, the Terminator is a ladder DAC, utilizing a network of ultra-precise thin-film resistors to decode the digital data stream.

With its dual FPGAs, the Terminator runs custom code, and much about its way with music remains proprietary. It is complicated because it also involves endless knowledge from outside the field of electronics… A good designer must also understand music cultivation, the recording processing, replay in a room dealing with specific acoustics and more.

Good sound is about all of these intangibles. Compared to the Terminator, the Spring sounded vague, grayish, and slightly mushy. In my system, the Spring prefers Roon to upsample files to double DSD, while the Terminator sounded better being fed native-resolution data.

We chose four tracks and listened. Yet the listening test seemed to contradict my experiences at home, where the Terminator bettered the Border Patrol in every meaningful way—and sounded much better than it had at the Haus. DeVore runs Roon on an iMac connected directly to the DAC via a USB cable, using generic power cords, while I use it over a network connection with a sonicTransporter, an ultraRendu, and a pair of ethernet-to-fiber converters in the mix, powered by a mess of external power supplies and specialized power cords.

It offers the option of allowing oversampling to be turned on and off—to my surprise, I preferred it engaged. These details aside, my time with the Terminator proved to be both transformative, edifying and wicked-fun. And while the Terminator seems to engender hype on the Internet, I must concede that much of that hype is deserved.

Audio gear only reproduce Frequencies at different amplitude and it has to do this in phase, if it's accurate it will be for any kind of music it does not know if it's classical or pop or jazz. Dense, detailed and incompatible leaves me feeling negative about this product.

How detailed is it, glaring harsh etc. The point I was trying to make is that many DACs either prioritize detail at the expense of tone, or tone at the expense of detail. This DAC, on the other hand, had both extraordinary tone and loads of fine detail.

Hope this makes it clearer. When I look at the rows of resistors, it makes me wonder about reliability compared to on-chip DACs.

Your attention to detail a' la Computer Audiophile no doubt allowed the Terminator to put its best foot forward and demonstrates that a "review" is NOT throwing a component into any given system and making a judgement on how it then performs. Very interesting review. Well written and enjoyable to read. I'd love to read more from Mr. I would like to know more about his system, which helps put the review in context. I also would have liked to see more in this review about the technology in the DAC, particularly the gazillion small capacitors, which is very unique.

But I understand that reviews don't always need to repeat technical explanations that can be found on the manufacturer's website.

DeVore source was not as good as the one you have at home and a better revealing DAC will show you that. The R2R 7 thread is alive and well, and a few of us have even posted our musings on the little brother R2R 11 there, but now that the R2R 2 is out, so I figure if you've got questions, thoughts, or impressions on any of the above, let's drop 'em here.

I know that the AGD stuff represents an excellent value in our community, but I wasn't prepared for the capability of that unit. The music felt different than any I could remember. Surprisingly un-mechanical and clear, but not industrial clear. I needed to know more about this DAC. Ladder DACs date back to the dawn of digital, and use cascaded voltage dividers consisting of resistors valued R and 2R to passively convert pulsing bitstreams to continuous analog voltages.

Aroundsingle-bit sigma-delta chips superseded these benignly musical multi-bit chips. Of course, just as when transistors superseded tubes, not every audiophile thought the new part was an improvement.

Nevertheless, it has the same purposeful looks and only a minimum of buttons on the front panel to make for a clean aesthetic. Every audio component is only as good as its power supply, so just like with the Master 1 preamp, the R8 DAC has a heavy emphasis on its power supply, using 3 R-core transformers and 21 low-noise regulation stages. A derivative of the more expensive R7, the R8 is said to preserve the same musicality with only minor changes to some parts of the circuitry.

For instance, the output stages of the R7 are all independently buffered while the R8 uses a single buffer for all its outputs. That in itself is no issue at all and may even result in better sound. You can, however, use ACSS and any of the two other outputs simultaneously. With the classic Sony ES components and later also with certain Chinese components, I found that the sound was somewhat synthetic, in other words, it was acoustically not convincing for me.

Rather, I think it is related to design choices and the selection of internal components, as well as the way that I interpret reproduced music with my systems. In any event, the Audio GD components have a wholly natural presentation: there is no artifice here! At over 13K euro, however, this is, again, not a fair comparison. The Aqua is a little smoother, more refined, especially in the treble, and it also has an even more linear presentation, flatter in perceived frequency curve so to say.

So, the Audio GD is less well-differentiated, a little bit rougher and not as ruler-flat. But that really is all there is to it. Otherwise, I really cannot say that there are any meaningful sonic differences between these two DACs. And that really is a remarkable achievement. The Vermouth Reference XLR yielded a more sonorous and more powerful and very precise sound but in this case, I preferred the gentler and airier treble performance of the other two cables. The number of options that the DAC offers can seem overwhelming at first but when you get down to it really is quite simple.

Basically, you have the option to listen with or without oversampling, the latter commonly referred to as NOS. Where it gets a little bit more complicated is that in each of these settings you have further options to refine the sound. Of all the options, I most prefer NOS and mode 1 but I also like 1x oversampling for its slightly smoother presentation than either of the NOS modes, which may work very well in systems that inherently are a little forward or possess a little edginess.

This DAC managed to outperform much more expensive DACs, primarily in terms of refinement and purity, but ultimately fell through for me because its bass lacked attack and drive, due to its very purist design that does not use any output stage. Further upping the game with the Magna Hifi M-Way ACSS cables, the aforementioned advantages of the Audio GD ACSS cables remained but enhanced with a smoother, more natural delivery that was more voluptuous and more richly textured, yet, while retaining the transparency and without sounding too warm. What convinced me most of all about the M-Way ACSS cables was the combination of factors such as even-handedness, warmth, and transparency and a seemingly ruler-flat frequency curve as well as a dynamically more outgoing and more free-flowing delivery.
